Aging Research Program- Aging and Dementia in Adults with Down Syndrome: Summary
Recent advances in medical and habilitative services have resulted in dramatic increases in the life expectancy of people with intellectual disabilities. It is now of immediate importance to develop a fundamental understanding of aging in this unique population. Studies of Alzheimer’s disease are particularly significant because adults with Down syndrome are at risk for this disease during middle age. For over 20 years, we have been studying aging and old age associated changes in health status and performance among adults with Down syndrome. We recently received an $8.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to continue our research for another five years.
