Moving to PA, looking for inclusive school

Posted by in Q and A Forum | 13 comments

My family and I are moving to Montgomery County (relocating from CA for a job) and have a 5 year old son who has Down Syndrome and is Deaf.  He is fully included in Kindergarten here and has a robust IEP.  We want to find a community and school district that is inclusive and where he will be in the general education class for all subjects and only pulled out for specific therapies such OT, PT, APE or Speech.  Any advice/shared experiences would be appreciated.

Guardianship in PA

Posted by in Q and A Forum | 1 comment

We moved from Illinois and are trying to transfer our daughter’s guardianship to PA. We are finding it a difficult process and are hoping that we might find some advice here. In Illinois we were able to complete the process with no costs (with some help from Law Students). In Pennsylvania it seems we have to hire a lawyer which adds up to large expenses. Does anyone know how we can do this for minimal amount of costs?

My four year old currently splits his school day between a typical developing preschool and the local mciu school. we are considering taking him out of the typical preschool for the summer.  I am wondering if it will do any harm? Do any other family split their time between schools? Should he go to both schools?

Suggestions for encouraging play with peers

Posted by in Q and A Forum | 1 comment

My three year old son currently goes to day care two days a week while I work and does really well playing by himself. A few of his therapists have noticed that he doesn’t typically play with the other kids. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to encourage play with other kids? I was thinking about trying to add this as a goal at the next IEP meeting.

Her son is currently enrolled at the Overbrook School for the Blind, under 3-5 with services being provided by Elwyn.   He is preparing for the transition to kindergarten.   She recently received his evaluations from the School District and she says the eval does not reflect her son.  She spoke with an advocate at the Arc of Philadelphia and it was recommended that she...

Behavoral Goal for child with Ds

Posted by in Q and A Forum | 0 comments

My child has a positive Behavioral plan.  The goal we are working on is following directions.  I am looking for a way to describe how to follow directions that she can understand.  One recommendation that was made was “Say okay and do it right away” – this would be the way the child would know she is “following directions”…”what it looks like” in a simple, concrete way.  I have a real problem with this….especially in the realm of problem solving and safety.  I don’t want her to...
