Vision Statements-A Useful Tool for IEP Meetings

A Vision Statement is a one page summary document explaining your short and long term goals for your child.  You can focus on both educational wants and social desires.  It is a tool to remind those on the IEP team what the parents’ goals for their child are.  All IEP goals / NOREP placement locations can then be reviewed against the goals on this vision statement to make sure they are in alignment.

An example of the IEP not aligning with the Vision Statement of one family is as follows: “In our case, having our daughter attend all day learning support class was not consistent with our vision of her attending school in the typical classrooms.”
