New
Website for Dads of children with Ds
www.dadsnational.org
Dads Appreciating Down Syndrome, or
D.A.D.S., is an organization of fathers of children who happen to have
Down syndrome. We hesitate to call our self a “support group”, even
though we do, in many ways, support each other. We prefer to think of
D.A.D.S. as an “action group.” You won’t find us in a church basement
drinking warm coffee and whining about having children with Down
syndrome. Instead, you’ll find us out in the community coaching our
kid’s sports teams, participating in our children’s IEPs, volunteering
at local Down syndrome fundraising events, and even sponsoring
fundraising events of our own.
We host regular meetings where our
members come together to share insights and experiences. Face it: there
are certain responsibilities that generally fall on the shoulders of the
father. Having a child with special needs often affects how we approach
those responsibilities. We invite expert speakers to discuss medical,
educational, financial, social, and many other issues that affect our
children’s lives. And of course, we share stories and experiences that
are unique to fathers of children with Down syndrome. Your colleagues at
the office may not understand your excitement when your 5 yr old makes
“poopie” on the toilet for the first time, but other D.A.D.S. will,
because we’ve all been there.
NDSS and NDSC e-news updates-We
receive frequent updates from these national organizations. These
updates are too frequent and numerous to include in the newsletter. We
encourage you to visit the websites and sign up for the email lists if
you wish to receive this important information.

As the blazing sun beats down upon him, he walks up along side it and

swings through the ball and powers it into the heart of the fairway.
Humbly, he just walks to his coach, his uncle, Bob Davis, and puts his
club away.

Early Intervention,
IEP, and School Recaps
Our past newsletters and meetings featured great
information about getting therapies, IEPs, ect. I wanted to
highlight them in case you missed them or are ready for the next
transition.
Starting Early Intervention (EI)
The 3
Year Old Transition (going from EI to the IU)
Our personal experience with this transition
The School Age Transition (going from the IU to the School)
Getting
Extra Therapy
We recently
started taking Josh for private therapy in addition to what he is
getting at the IU. He is still having sensory and feeding issues and we
felt he might benefit from one on one therapy outside the classroom. We
are taking him to Theraplay in Limerick, but private therapies are
offered by many different places, including CHOP. Josh’s Medical Access
Keystone Mercy insurance covers this completely, including the co pay.
While it is difficult to fit these additional therapies into our
schedule, we are going to give it a try for a while and see if there is
any improvement. We wanted to make sure everyone is aware that there are
other cost free options out there if you feel like your child needs
additional help in one or more areas. Josh is currently getting private
Speech and OT.
